Surrendering Your Schedule To God

Woman praising God.

Letting God Shape Your Daily Priorities

Are you anything like me, where your morning routine seems to dictate the course of your entire day? For me, this is especially true. If I skip my time with God—those moments of quiet prayer and reflection—my frustration threshold is lower, and I’m far more prone to impatience. But when I make room for God first, I notice a tangible shift in my mood. Like Moses’s plea in Psalm 90:14: “Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.” In those moments of prayer, I feel that deep satisfaction of being anchored in God’s unchanging grace and covered in His unwavering mercy—which is renewed every day.

My Reset Moment

To be transparent, there have been times I’ve missed those moments with God by choosing my own way instead of His. Because of that, I’ve had to pause and re-evaluate not only where I am spiritually, but where I should be.

Like many women who naturally prioritize everyone else’s needs, it’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of life and lose ourselves in the process. That’s why prayer should be our compass—helping us focus on what truly matters and preventing us from running ourselves ragged.

One of those reset moments for me came when a former high school friend called to say she was having surgery the next day. Although it wasn’t life-threatening, she admitted that ignoring it could lead to serious complications. Years of sacrificing herself—mentally, emotionally, and physically—had taken a toll, and her body was finally demanding her attention.

Hearing her story made me wonder: How often do we fill our schedules with seemingly good commitments without asking if they’re the right commitments? The conversation struck a deeper chord for me than I expected. Especially since I also had and have several church members grappling with serious illnesses and friends wrestling with mental health challenges. Hearing these women’s stories, I couldn’t help but wonder: How often do we sacrifice our well-being by loading up our schedules with activities that seem valuable on the surface, without ever pausing to see if they truly align with our God-given priorities?

Refocusing on Priorities

Reflecting on my own life, I realized how easy it is to drift into that same trap. Without clear, God-given priorities, we get distracted by life’s demands, chasing what appears socially acceptable instead of what’s genuinely necessary.

In my own re-prioritization efforts this week, I asked God to guide me in discerning what I needed to change to be more in alignment with His will. One major shift was moving “Health and Exercise” from a lower priority under “My Present Focus” to a higher priority under “My God-Given Focus.” It became unmistakably clear that honoring the body He entrusted to me is far from optional—it’s part of how I glorify Him. As 1 Corinthians 6:20 reminds us, “[I was] bought at a price [through Jesus’ death on the cross]; therefore [I should] glorify God in [my] body and in [my] spirit, which are God’s.”

A Call to Action

My friend’s story, coupled with the gentle nudging of God’s Word, underscored the need for change in how I care for both my spiritual and physical well-being. It’s a reminder that caring for our bodies is more than self-care; it’s an act of worship. And while there are other areas God is inviting me to adjust, this renewed focus on health has been a critical first step, especially as I get older.

What is God nudging you to do?

Ultimately, the key to lasting transformation lies in allowing prayer to shape every aspect of our lives. When we seek God first—before the to-do lists, the texts, and the emails—He graciously realigns our hearts with His purposes. And that simple morning discipline of prayer makes everything a little more clearer.
